Laser Correction in Children

Laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK) is a proven procedure for correcting refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In adults, it has long been part of everyday ophthalmology. In children, however, it is used only in rare exceptional cases.

What does laser correction do?

In laser treatment, the cornea (the front, transparent layer of the eye) is reshaped with an excimer laser so that light is once again correctly focused on the retina. There are various procedures:

  • LASIK: tissue is removed with the laser beneath a corneal flap
  • PRK: the top layer of the cornea is removed and then the laser is applied directly to the cornea

Why not routinely in children?

There are several reasons why laser correction is not performed as standard in children:

  • Changing glasses values: children's eyes are still growing, and the refractive power changes into young adulthood. A correction that fits today may no longer be right in a few years.
  • Cooperation: children cannot keep still during the procedure and have to be operated on under general anesthesia.
  • No approval: in most countries, laser correction is not approved for minors.
  • More intensive aftercare: the follow-up treatment is more complex than in adults.

When can laser correction in children make sense?

In selected individual cases, laser treatment in children may be considered when conventional methods fail:

  • Glasses intolerance: the child cannot wear glasses for medical or developmental reasons (e.g. with severe disabilities).
  • Contact lenses not possible: contact lenses are not tolerated or are practically impossible to use.
  • Severe anisometropia: a large difference in refractive power between the two eyes that cannot be sufficiently compensated for with glasses and leads to amblyopia (lazy eye).
  • Threatening amblyopia: when there is no other correction option and the vision of one eye is endangered by the uncorrected refractive error.

Procedure in children

Since children cannot cooperate during the procedure, laser treatment is performed under general anesthesia. The aftercare includes anti-inflammatory and moisturizing eye drops over several weeks. Close check-ups are necessary to monitor the healing process and assess visual development.

What laser correction cannot do

Important to understand: laser correction only corrects the refractive power of the eye. It does not treat strabismus (squint) and does not replace amblyopia therapy. Children who have reduced vision after laser treatment still need patch or drop therapy.

The decision in favor of laser correction in a child is a careful individual decision. It is only an option when all conventional correction possibilities have been exhausted and the child's visual development would be endangered without the procedure.
