The symptoms often appear only hours after the injury: blurred vision, a dark spot in the visual field, distorted vision, or color vision disturbances. Pain is typically absent, since the retina has no pain receptors.
There is no established therapy for laser-related retinal damage. In some cases, vision improves partially over weeks to months, but a complete recovery is not always possible. With accompanying complications such as retinal bleeding or a macular hole, surgical treatment may become necessary.
Laser pointer injuries in children and adolescents are increasing, as powerful devices are easily accessible. Take your child's reports seriously if they say they looked into a laser, even if everything appears normal on the outside. A timely examination of the fundus can determine the extent of the damage.
