A clear understanding helps in taking the right measures.

What are learning disorders?

Learning disorders (also called learning difficulties or learning disabilities) are neurologically based impairments that affect the processing of information in the brain. They can affect various areas:

Reading (dyslexia)

Writing (dysgraphia)

Arithmetic (dyscalculia)

Language and attention

About 15 to 20% of the population are affected by a learning disorder. Children with learning difficulties usually have normal intelligence and often have particular strengths in other areas. Dyslexia is the most common form.

Do eye problems cause learning disorders?

No. Learning disorders are not a consequence of eye problems. Dyslexia, for example, is a disorder of language processing in the brain: the eyes themselves are healthy. Children with dyslexia do not see letters "twisted" or "mirror-inverted," as is often assumed; their brain processes the linguistic information differently.

When do the eyes nevertheless play a role?

Even though eye problems do not cause learning disorders, they can make learning additionally more difficult:

Uncorrected refractive error: a child who sees poorly cannot clearly recognize the board or the book. A simple glasses correction can achieve a lot here.

Convergence insufficiency: difficulty bringing the eyes together at close range when reading can lead to headaches, eye fatigue, and concentration problems.

Squint: can disturb binocular vision and impair concentration while reading.

That is why we recommend: every child with learning difficulties should have a comprehensive eye examination in order to rule out or correct treatable vision problems.

What about "vision therapy" for learning problems?

So-called vision therapies or "vision therapy" programs sometimes promise to treat learning disorders such as dyslexia through eye exercises or special glasses. There is no scientific evidence for this. Major ophthalmological and pediatric professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Pediatrics, consistently conclude:

Eye exercises do not improve learning disorders

Tinted lenses or overlays (e.g. Irlen filters) have no proven benefit for dyslexia

The time and cost of ineffective therapies can distract from proven support measures

What really helps with learning disorders?

Proven measures include:

Educational assessment: evaluation by specialists (school psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy)

Individualized support: structured, multisensory learning programs (e.g. for dyslexia)

School support: compensation for disadvantages, adapted exam conditions, targeted support services

Early intervention: the earlier a learning disorder is recognized and supported, the better the prognosis

When a child has difficulties at school, parents often ask: “Is it the eyes?” The relationship between vision and learning is an important topic that often leads to misunderstandings.
