The lower eyelid is usually affected. Epiblepharon is particularly common in children of East Asian descent but also occurs in children of other ethnicities.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>In epiblepharon, an extra skin and muscle fold at the eyelid margin pushes the eyelash row upward and inward. Unlike <strong>entropion<\/strong> (in which the entire eyelid turns inward), the eyelid position itself remains normal in epiblepharon. Only the eyelashes are redirected.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>The inward-directed eyelashes rub on the cornea and conjunctiva, which can lead to the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Watery eyes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Redness and irritation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Foreign body sensation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Frequent rubbing of the eyes<\/strong> (especially in young children)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Light sensitivity<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>With prolonged contact: <strong>corneal abrasions<\/strong> (erosions), which can cause pain and temporary vision deterioration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some children show surprisingly few symptoms despite noticeably inward-turned eyelashes because their lashes are softer than those of adults.<\/p><div class=\"card-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"card base-card with-color\" style=\"--card-padding: clamp(2rem,1.74038rem + 1.15385cqw,2.75rem)\">\n<div class=\"card-inner\">\n<h3>Does Your Child Often Rub Their Eyes?<\/h3>\n<p>Watery, red eyes and frequent rubbing can point to eyelashes rubbing against the cornea. Over the first years of life, the facial anatomy changes - the cheeks become narrower, the nasal bridge becomes higher - so that the excess skin fold at the eyelid recedes and the eyelashes assume their natural outward direction.<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment<\/h2>\n<h3>Conservative Measures<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lubricating eye drops or ointments:<\/strong> Protect the cornea from friction and relieve symptoms<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regular check-ups:<\/strong> To detect corneal damage early<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watchful waiting:<\/strong> Especially in younger children with mild symptoms, since spontaneous improvement is likely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Surgical Treatment<\/h3>\n<p>Surgery is recommended when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recurrent or persistent corneal abrasions occur<\/li>\n<li>Significant symptoms persist despite conservative measures<\/li>\n<li>No spontaneous improvement occurs with growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the surgical procedure, the excess skin and muscle fold at the eyelid margin is removed and the eyelashes are brought into a natural position. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually leaves an inconspicuous scar in the eyelid area. The success rate is high.<\/p>\n<h2>What Parents Should Know<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Epiblepharon often looks more concerning than it actually is.
